MATE – Multifuncion Assistent for liTtle kids and the Elderly

The project MATE, financed with funds from the PON Impresa e Competitività MISE 2014-2020, aimed at developing an intelligent wearable multipurpose device, remotely programmable, in support of
necessity of daily life, to the weaker sections of the population (Senior citizens, children, sick).

MATE is a wearable device, quite similar to a bracelet, that interacts with a software platform. By exploiting the potential of the Internet of Things, through simple App, allows the activation of a wide range of services that specifically target vulnerable sections of the population, with specific reference to the elderly (> 65 years), to children and people with cognitive and / or motor disabilities. The device has an NB-IoT communication module, an inertial measurement unit, wireless charging and an energy harvesting system to maximize battery life and is able to communicate with voice. With great simplicity, MATE allows you to:

  • record and collect data in real time (heart rate);
  • geolocalize the user;
  • detect falls and send alarms;
  • play notifications and reminders, in order to improve compliance with therapies;
  • perform simple cognitive rehabilitation tasks for people with mild cognitive impairment.

The bracelet has a simplified two-button interface and can be reprogrammed and customized (alarms, task, memorandum,…) through an app for caregivers or health professionals, using the dedicated web platform.

Major achievements:

  • MATE has generated a new way of providing assistance to the weaker sections of the population, through an innovative tool that overcomes the limits of current devices in terms of ease of use;
  • The device improves or solves the problems of therapeutic compliance in the elderly and / or people with reduced cognitive abilities;
  • Facilitates the request for help from weak people in difficulty;
  • It provides valuable daily support in the rehabilitation paths of people with cognitive impairment and has been shown to improve some cognitive performance through the execution of simple tasks.
